Two bystanders have saved the day, catching an alleged phone thief at the University of Newcastle.
The men were at the Callaghan campus late yesterday morning when they heard two women scream.
A man allegedly stole a phone from one of the students and had attempted to take the other woman's phone as they waited at a bus stop in Ring Road.
After hearing the screams, the men chased the suspect and held the 34 year old until police arrived.
The alleged thief has been charged with two counts of steal from person (one attempted). He was also charged over an outstanding warrant relating to an alleged robbery.
He'll face Newcastle Local Court today.
