The race for the Supercars championship has reignited on day one of the Newcastle 500.
Championship leader Jamie Whincup set the pace during today's opening practice session, with the Holden driver clocking a lap of 1:10.158 on the street circuit.
However Ford driver Scott McLaughlin topped the day's time sheet during the second practice session after recording a 1:09.595 hot lap.
The drivers now turn their attention to qualifying, which starts at 11am tomorrow.
Meantime fans came out in their droves for day one, with well over 30,000 present at the racing precinct throughout the day.
Plenty more are expected with Delta Goodrem and The Veronicas performing tonight, with the performances starting at 6.05pm.
