Joey Montagna has gone into bat for Gary Ablett after his late miss against Richmond last night, saying that Ablett wasn’t soft in the moment.
Ablett has come under some criticism with some suggestions that he missed because he was trying to avoid contact from a shepherding Richmond player.
Joey said that Ablett ran away from the player because he was trying to make space to have a shot on goal.
"We know Gary Ablett missed the goal, he could have been the match winner, heaven forbid he made a mistake… he was 30 metres out, he got away from his opponent, had time and space to kick the goal, he just didn’t execute it,” Joey said.
“He miskicked it, he didn’t kick it flush, it should have gone through but it didn’t.
“You can say that he tried to avoid contact and not taken the contact when he kicked for goal, you’re having a shot for goal!
“You’re not trying to get contact, you’re trying to avoid contact!”
Ablett’s miss was bitterly disappointing for the Cats, who had managed to get themselves in to position to be the first side to beat Richmond at the MCG since last year.
